‘Hybrid Love’ Performance (2022)

To reimagine loving despite where we come from

Performed at Bournemouth Little Theatre Club by Chanda Mwamba, Ella-Ismay Grieb-Young, and Rose-Marie Luk.

Sculptures made from wire armature, modroc, plaster, acrylic paint. Duration of 04:35 minuets.

My aim was to create wearable sculptures representing science-fictional hybrids to tell a story about cross-cultural relationships. Therefore, to reimagine loving despite where we come from, and as outsiders finding a sense of belonging together. My performance art piece presents the themes of hybridity and alienation with a unifying approach and makes connections with humans to the natural world.

My surreal artwork reinterprets my alienation I have experienced growing up in Britain as a mixed-race half Chinese woman. Observing the beauty of naturally occurring design from animals, insects, and botany has inspired me and feels similar to learning about the cultures I am both a part of and an outsider to. I have been inspired by the markings in wildlife that act as defence mechanisms or tools for attraction. This evolution reminds me of how I’ve presented myself to society like a shapeshifter to armour myself, whilst trying to find a sense of my own authenticity.

In my performance piece I told a story through choreography and explored character in each creature through body movement and displayed the change in the relationship dynamic.
