I was born in Hong Kong and have a British Eurasian heritage. I am based in Bournemouth, UK studying my BA (Hons) Fine Art at AUB. I am interested in exploring my cross-cultural identity and the sense of alienation I have experienced growing up in Britain through creating science-fictional creatures inspired by the beauty of naturally occurring design from animals, insects, and botany. I’ve been examining the peculiar shapeshifting identity in adolescence with camouflage and aposematism to armour ourselves feels similar to learning about the cultures I am both a part of and an outsider to, and how I navigate my position within different social circles. I am creating a world as an outsider for you to be inside of. Finding duality by making life-size automatic drawings to consider the relationship to the body while holding a piece of charcoal in each hand and allowing music to guide my somatic movement and capture my spirit. With my hand-drawn designs I’ve created life size wearable sculptures in my performance art piece ‘Hybrid Love’ exhibited in a theatre context to tell a story about ambivalent cross-cultural relationships. I have also been working on contemporising the ancient Chinese technique of papermaking by combining it with cooking as an art form which contains essence of distant motherlands. In my multi-disciplinary project ‘幸運星 Lucky Stars’ I responded to the aural experience of music sung in Finnish, Hindi, and Cantonese; languages I can’t understand but I am distantly connected to. Working in tandem with sensuality of music and flavours allows me to delve past my British upbringing and travel back to my mysterious roots. Finding authenticity by creating my own visual language that I can ultimately comprehend with mark making. Currently I am creating magical science- fictional amalgamations by combining wax and clay with gathered natural objects. By researching the 5 phases in Taoist philosophy I’ve managed to make deeper symbolism with my organic looking sculptures to Chinese sorcery and mysticism. My merging of shells, rocks, home gown crystals, sticks encrusted with jewels to make sculptures resembling mystical monster horns or miniature archaeological landscapes.
